Cape Verde Climate

Cape Verde's climate is generally sunny throughout the year, making it a dry, tropical paradise. Irregular and unpredictable rainfall is present, but the rainy seasons usually last from August to October. The East Winds blowing from the African mainland from January to February keep the Cape Verde climate warmer during those months.

The archipelago is located in the Sahel Zone, making it the marine extension of the Sahara desert. Because of this, storms from the Sahara sometimes obscure the sun during the winter. The Cape Verde climate is also prone to hurricanes because of the storms mowing westward from the Atlantic Ocean. These hurricanes are intense, but they don't prevent the island from experiencing a summer climate throughout most of the year. This can be seen as a good thing, because despite Cape Verde's sunny climate, it also welcomes cool breezes - especially in the mountain ranges and the sea at night. This cool breeze tempers the moderately high humidity present in Cape Verde's climate.

The temperature of Cape Verde's climate ranges from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius (70 to 81 degrees Farenheit), and the total rainfall each year only amounts to an average of 9.5 inches. Sunshine lasts for around 7 to 10 hours from February to June.

Since the Cape Verde climate is generally tropical, light clothing is recommended, although an umbrella and raincoat is necessary if you're travelling during the rainy seasons. Even then, the rainfall usually lasts as short bursts, so it is acceptable to wear summer attire the whole year round.
