Cape Verde Flag
The Cape Verde flag has a large blue stripe that runs across the length of the flag, covering half the flag's width. It is followed by a thick, horizontal red stripe between two horizontal white stripes of similar thickness. The last stripe is also blue, but it is half the thickness of the first blue stripe. Overlapping these stripes is a circular shape composed of 10 yellow stars.
The 10 stars of the Cape Verde flag represent the 10 main islands, and the circular shape they form represents the nation's unity. The blue parts of the Cape Verde flag represent the blue sea that surrounds this beautiful archipelago. The red stripe between the two white stripes represents "the road to economic progress", which the country hopes to take. The white stripes on the Cape Verde flag represent peace.
This Cape Verde flag was made official on 1992, when Cape Verde severed ties with Guinea-Bissau. Before this new flag, these two nations had similar flags due to the fact that they were both part of the Partido Africano da Independjncia da Guini e Cabo Verde, a movement that aimed to gain liberation and independence for both countries.
The previous Cape Verde flag, like the Guinea-Bissau flag, had a thick red stripe running across the width of the flag. A black star is placed in front of the red stripe. The rest of the flag is divided in half cross-wise, with the top being colored yellow, and the bottom colored green. Unlike the Guinea-Bissau flag, the Cape Verde flag had a wreath surrounding the black star.
